MILLIONS of people across Britain who never go to the pub were last night asking why all the pubs were closing down.
|Posted on 14 April, 2012 at 14:52||comments ()|
Heres a headline recently run by the Daily Mash, as humerous as it is deadly serious. The debate is centered around;
Social change - So you cant have a pint and drive home, You cant have fag while sipping a cold one at the bar, whats the alternative? Sitting at home staring at your computer whether: your listening to music on spotify, watching other peoples status for something more intereting than what they had for lunch or hoping someone replies to something you've posted. How many nights in with the same people; hosting dinner parties, barbeques, playing x-box or listening to the mrs can you take. When all is said and done theres the cleaning up, restocking the cupboards, fixing the thing someone broke and the water bill for all that loo flushing.
Smoking ban - has had the single biggest effect on pubs since the drink driving laws. Since 2007 even the steadiest of pubs has seen a steady decline in business. It is unwise to leave your drink unguarded while nipping out for a fag, especially for a woman. Standing outside your local, glass in hand, while trying to light a fag is awkward. The cluster of people and associated smoke cloud is hardly the best advert for an establishment.
Beer taxes - When you find that you can get stock items cheaper from your corner shop than you can from your wholesalers you have to wonder where the real problem lies. Supermarkets using their buying power is one thing but the corner shop?
Economics - The one thing I havent seen mentioned in most of these debates is the lack of money in cirulation. Rising unemployment says those with money may choose to stay in but for many others it is not a choice. A couple of cans at the weekend while watching MOTD is as good as it gets for some.
As with everything in life it comes down to you! If your happy having your future dictated to you then by all means stand on the side lines. Landlords up and down the country have been patiently waiting for the night you fancy poping out, but as the closures show they wont be waiting forever. Those of you in a position to act should do so. If your local is not as it should be: dont vote with your feet put pressure on your landlord, loby the council, do something. Demonstrate some resistance to the stay at home culture that is being cultivated for us all.
Be the change you want to see!

PANAORAMA is getting dangerously close to telling the truth about our Government.
"Tonight" the programme annouces "Panorama investigates the Multi Billion pound deals hidden from the taxpayer.......deals that arent always what they seem......deals that have allowed a small group of companies and private financiers to make a killing from the taxpayer".
Reporter John Ware makes the observation that across the country a new power is making its presence felt, unelected and unaccountable. He refers to the private finance initiative,
PFI contracts that have passed ownership of this countries infrastructure into private hands.
The underlying theme of the programme is the massive overcharging, in some cases as much as £2bn, per project.
According to the Guardian - The PFI was first announced by Norman Lamont in 1992, but the complex deals proliferated at Gordon Brown's Treasury. Private sector providers agree to build and run schools, hospitals and other infrastructure projects, typically over 30 years, in exchange for a stream of payments from the public purse.
Balfour Beatty, Thames Water, energy company EDF, engineering specialist WS Atkins and Canada's Bombardier are just some of the firms cashing in on the private finance initiative.
If you have ever asked the question, what happens to all the money we pay in taxes? This is probably as close to an answer as you will get.
After 20 years of PFI's the current cost to the taxpayer stands at £300bn.
Typically no blame has been laid at the Governments door other than to say the Treasury has failed to act. Ask yourself how these private financiers gained access to the public purse in the first place..

This letter is a warning – from the people. It is not a request that requires an answer, But it does require a response – by way of action on your part that demonstrates that you understand its substance and the seriousness of our intent.
The collective political establishment has betrayed the British people by transferring our national sovereignty to a foreign power without our consent. This is in defiance of our constitution and an act of treason.
You do not need to know how many people we represent today, only how many we might represent tomorrow and you should know that our numbers grow daily. This letter thus serves as your window of opportunity to make amends and give remedy for the crimes committed against us. We will show compassion for those who recant and we will be ruthless with those who do not concede to the wishes of the people.
Ignoring this letter is not an option… if you think it is, then this serves only to demonstrate that your intellect is subservient to your arrogance. You may feel that you can ignore it because you are too powerful, but to do so is to underestimate the seething resentment that the people feel for the political establishment in general.
I, the undersigned, did not write this letter, but it expresses what I think about the way that we are being misgoverned. You have acted in contempt of the principles of democracy and shown total disregard for our right to govern ourselves. It does not matter who penned the words of this letter, what matters is what is says.
For the past several decades the British people have been treated with extraordinary and total contempt by the collective political establishment. It has not mattered which political party has been in office or “power” as you insist on calling it, nothing ever changes. We are continually subjected to the same global agenda. We have been used and abused like pawns in your game of supremacy in which a dynastic ruling class see themselves as ordained to rule as masters – with impunity, whilst we the people, as virtual slaves, are supposedly destined to obey – without question. You have persistently and consistently undermined our democracy by agreeing to treaties with foreign political elites who have no business in our affairs.
You have rewarded yourselves with the trappings of office – high salaries, luxuries denied most of us, privileges, pensions, prestige and benefits that we can only dream of… whilst burdening us with ever-higher taxes, derisory pensions and declining standards of public services. It is we who pay the price for your malfeasance.
The story of Britain over the past several decades that will be told in the history books of tomorrow is the story of betrayal, greed, corruption, nepotism, treason and modern day fascism – the latter of which manifests itself in the global agenda being imposed upon us against our will.
The European union – a step process towards global governance is now fully exposed. Built on lies and deceit is being hoisted by its own petard – the ediface is crumbling but still the political elite like demented fools, continue to feed on their own delusions. The docile masses, mesmerised by trivia, propaganda, complacency and ignorance have still somehow managed to grasp some basic elements of the truth, alerted almost certainly by the blatant and arrogant refusal of the political elite to tell the truth even when it stands proud in the rubble of political deceit and betrayal.
The political class are discredited at every level. They rant about the benefits of our subjugation to a foreign enterprise, peace, prosperity and democracy where in reality chaos, dictatorship and corruption reign supreme. European economies are on the brink of collapse because of the corrupt banking cartels, there is visible resistance on the streets and people call for lawful rebellion. But less known, there is clandestine resistance behind closed doors. Whilst the majority advocate a peaceful uprising, the extremes will always be in the mix and when passion and anger are fused and those aggrieved can find no remedy… violent resistance is as understandable as the passion for life itself.
The police and militia that you currently rely on to defend yourselves against the peoples retribution… are made up of our own, they are not your people – and when they learn about your betrayal and your intent… AND THEY WILL – they will turn against you. Their awakening, which you cannot stop, is your Achilles heel. Your greatest fear must be that we will impose upon you the regimes and repression that you had planned for us.
People are meeting in groups across the country, talking across oceans… they are disparate, disorganised and without an effective plan to repel the global agenda…as yet. BUT a leadership is emerging… organisers are co-ordinating and small groups are linking to form larger groups. The dichotomies of left v right, Christian v Muslim, black v white, Catholic v Protestant, which have been used to great effect to divide and conquer in the past, will find no favour in this war. The call to arms that will unite us will be ‘the people v the global elite’ – the cry will cascade street to street and find easy passage and universal support – for our common purpose has greater value and strength than yours.
We have a constitution – which you ignore. We have been denied our democratic rights, regardless, we have clearly expressed our wishes, in one opinion poll after another, that we do not want to be governed by a foreign un elected officialdom, but still you disregard us. We are promised a referendum on our future, but then you recant. You speak in support of our views when in opposition, but act to the contrary when we elect you.
You consult with corporate executives, international bankers, non-government organisations, international charities, academia, foreign dignitaries, political elites, think tanks and lobbyist – collectively a tiny minority, who do not represent us. These groups all emanate from the same social strata, with their own agendas to satisfy and all funded by the same cartel. You take note of their every whim, but you care not a jot for what we think or what we want. Your children are given jobs, with big salaries fresh from university and then rapidly climb the corporate ladder as a reward by the same corporate bodies who you have favoured with your decisions. Our children must make their own way in an increasingly desperate world. Your corporatism suppresses our freedoms with deliberate and malicious intent.
You accommodate tyrants, dictators, arms dealers and all manner of dubious characters, with whom you are happy to keep company. You turn a blind eye when the smell of money wafts your nostrils… it suppresses the stink of corruption and evil. Your moral compasses are defunct… your values deplorable and motives despicable. Our soldiers die to service your corporate agenda – their blood is on your hands.
You are educated at the same elite schools and members of the same elite clubs and you allow these influences to override the consideration which should be paramount in service of the people. You have adopted the “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine” philosophy… because you have learnt from your predecessors that corruption and deception do indeed pay. The European Union is awash with it and you have determined to get your snout in the same trough. You take comfort from the fact that you control those who have the authority to indict you for your criminality… because they too have fallen prey to the corruption. You have sold off our national resources to your friends, divided communities, deprived villages and towns, undermined, destroyed and bulldozed. You have laid waste where once prosperity was enjoyed. But you have not suffered… you have remained aloof, disengaged, uninvolved – removed from the debris and the misery that you have wreaked upon the rest of us.
We have seen our three billion annual fishing industry handed over to foreign control for nil reward. Our farms no longer feed us, crippled by regulations made to favour foreign farmers. Our ship-building has been dismantled and our merchant fleet whittled to nothing. Our armed forces are under strength and we see foreign troops being trained on our own soil on the pretence that they may be needed to protect us… when the reality is they are being trained to subdue us… to protect you from our vengeance. Our children are victims of social engineering in the schools and declining standards of education. They are being sexualised by explicit exposures before they have the emotional maturity to be able to cope. You are destroying their minds and their childhoods.
You have engineered a police state with legislation that empowers you at our expense and you have been blatant in your contempt for our democratic and constitution rights and our common law, which have been known to us for centuries. You deny us our rights and our freedoms and contemptuously imply that you can provide us with a new Bill of Rights. Would we seriously trust a thief with our wallets? You have corrupted our courts by appointing judges who are contemptuous of our common law.
You have dissected our nation and sold off our infrastructure. We buy our own water from foreign corporations which grow rich on the back of our suffering. Pensioners die of the cold because they are unable to afford their heating bills visited upon them by foreign corporate greed. You are then rewarded by them with lucrative directorships when you slip quietly from office with your bulging pensions. You remain oblivious, unconcerned… disconnected. We will no longer be ignored as you go about your globalist agenda. We will resist your controlling and petty rules and regulations… we will resist your fines and penalty charges and challenge your corrupt and biased judges, we will defy the over-zealous police, and your oppressive and unlawful taxes.
It is our intention to govern ourselves… we do not seek your permission – this is our right. You have had your opportunity and you have failed. We will take control of our own lives in stages, as and when it suits us. Our numbers will grow as we show by example that prosperity is the natural consequence of honest and fair governance. We will expose you for the parasites you are.
This country has a constitution – which you ignore. We have Magna Carta, the declaration and the Bill of Rights… we have trial by jury, habeas corpus, the coronation oath. We have our customs, traditions and common law. We have the right of petition, free speech, and free movement and above all… we have the right to govern ourselves. These are our inalienable rights – they are not privileges granted to us by you or your ilk. They cannot be taken away or extinguished at the whim of political diktat or through corrupt judicial process and certainly not at the behest of foreign undemocratic institutions. You have no authority to dictate… your duty is to serve.
We do not recognise regions imposed upon us by Europeans to affect their control over us – to divide and conquer us. We are a sovereign nation… a proud people. We have watched our country slowly destroyed… by you – we now see clearly what you have done… your purpose and your betrayal. We will honour our inheritance – the freedoms fought for and secured for us, and we will ensure that we will pass this on to the next generation, to our children and theirs.
You have been sent this letter by a constituent. On sending a copy to you, they have also registered your name with the coordinators. This will remain with us as evidence for your trial… for treason, should it be necessary. It’s your choice.
We are many – you are few… and our leaders are emerging.
You have been warned.

The lie is that we, as a Nation, are bankrupt and therefore we must suffer massive public sector spending cuts to our military and public services in order to help balance the books. The lie is simple, but it is still a lie. Britain is not bankrupt. The International Banks are bankrupt and have hung their £6 trillion of debt around the neck of the British Nation.
When a company or sole trader becomes insolvent, receivers are called in to manage the companies affairs, to try and salvage the company as a going concern, and in the worst case, to pay off those who are owed money by the insolvent company. Having placed a company in Receivership, the existing company Directors are hardly the best people to leave controlling the company. A priority will be to remove the company Directors from their posts, or to monitor them in their execution of the receivers instructions.
Yet none of this has happened with the International Banks. Having passed through insolvency and into bankruptcy, the Banks have not only been allowed to continue to trade, their debts have been covered from the public purse. This would appear to be madness, but is in fact, much more serious. The failure of the banks is being used as the excuse to strip the UK of effective Armed Forces and a credible defence of the Nation State.
We do not need defence cuts, we should simply throw away the worst banks, write off the debts - vast as they are - and leave the bankers to suffer their well deserved bankruptcy. The Government should then print and issue its own money (charging a modest and necessary interest) to fund the Nation’s defence. The same should be done for funding of all other necessary public services and infrastructure. Aside from removing excessive bank interest, better known as usary, from the backs of the population, the government will then be able to more easily and effectively manage inflation, by direct control over the issue of currency, and the growth of the money supply.

An article by Catherine Varney in the Times & Citizen reports that Bedford Borough Council refers 4,726 residents to debt recovery agencies, Central Beds refers 2,218, presumably this is per year.
The article quotes a spokesperson for Bedford Borough saying, "Before the council can instruct a Baliff it must have issued at least one reminder notice and must obtain an order for payment from the magistrates' court".
Roger Hayes from the British Constitution group has long questioned the legitimacy of the council tax. Specifically, councils breaking the law by issuing their own summonses and liability orders. His own court room experience tells of how confident councils are that there can only be one outcome. He states, '' Mr Fixit-for-the-council’ had every intention of steamrolling this hearing to a pre-determined conclusion – i.e. in favour of the council". He outlines how an unsigned liability order was presented as evidence by the council.
"I, _________ , do swear by Almighty God that I will well and truly serve
our Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth the Second in the office of ________ ,
and I will do right to all manner of people after the laws and usages of
this realm, without fear or favour, affection or ill will. "
Are judges fulfilling their oath of office or are they merely acting as administrators?
The system is stacked against us and it is for this reason that it must be challenged. We want our courts dealing with justice not acting as a revenue collecting tools for the government and local councils, whose remit seems to be to take as much money from us as they can get away with. Excessive and unreasonable speeding and parking fines are just two examples of oppressive regulations that are making our lives a misery. Overzealous officialdom is the scourge of our lives and it needs to be put firmly back in its box. They are supposed to serve us not oppress us. (uk column)

A BBC programme based on the premise that the words “see you in court” can be the most expensive you will ever hear, with the potential to ruin your life or business. The former wife of the England footballer, Gazza, finds the costs of litigation a barrier to seeking redress againsts tabloid newspapers.
Sheryl was denounced by tabloids as a “lying bitch”, another story blamed her for Paul’s drinking and yet another claimed she was denying her ex-husband access to their son. As these stories were clearly defamatory and could not be substantiated, the three newspapers settled, paying her damages and costs.
QC's and Judges decide who pays and who gets paid but as pointed out in the Telegraph today. "It is the legal profession and the protracted litigation that rack the costs up for both sides, not only making it unfeasibly costly for someone such as Mrs Gascoigne to go to court to restore her reputation but also for newspapers to defend themselves from vexatious litigants and so-called libel tourists. The Government recently proposed reforms to cut the costs and to uphold the rights of newspapers, academics and others to express “an honest opinion”, replacing the old defence of fair comment"
Roddy Chisholm Batten of Clintons Solicitors representing Mrs Gascoigne, explains to her why judges never give lawyers what they ask for in their costs, but states that dispite this the lawyers still charge the client the full amount. I agree with Sheryl thats disgusting.
"If a cost judge looks at your papers, he will look at your timesheet and look at the letters and say, oh you spent an hour on this it should only have taken half an hour" at this point the prograrmmes narrator talks over the rest of Roddy's conversation.
If nothing else I ask you to think about this small point. If the court appointed judge thinks that the lawyers have inflated their costs beyond what is reasonable and on that grounds refuses to accept them, why should you?. Why should lawyers still expect clients to pay costs that have been shown, in a court of law, to be unreasonable.
I rest my case!

Once upon a time if you ran a pub it was a profitable business to be in. The rents were reasonable, the margins good and the lifestyle a good one. Sadly things are not what they where. The continued hike in tax on beer, together with the deregulation of brewery owned pubs has lead to a free fall in the viability of most pubs. After deregulation and the scramble for pub estates by companies who knew nothing about the beer trade the inevitable rent rises began.
Pub estates are now viewed as property portfolios. The pub chain is not solely interested in beer sales as such but more the high rent revenues generated by their estates. Because of these factors there has been a huge turnover of tenants over recent years, with people finding it impossible to make a living. The seemingly never-ending line of people wanting to live the dream and run their own pub is now drying up. Where once taking on a pub as a business was a good idea, now the penny has dropped and most prospective landlords realise that it is a quick way of going broke.
Every five years all commercial properties are revalued to take into account shifts in value between UK regions and different market sectors. The revaluation for pubs and all other categories of property must be based, by law, on rental values at 1 April 2008 – for pubs this reflects expectations of trade at that date and bears no relation to the actual performance of a business. This might explain why the average pub’s rateable value has increased by 23%.
Information collected on actual rents and turnovers was collated before the smoking ban in 2007 which decreased pub turnovers dramatically.
38% of British pub goers are smokers and account for 49% of an average pub’s income
This figure comes from Harris International Marketing and is based, I believe, on a sample of 4038 pubs. CR Consulting's analysis revealed a striking correlation in the rate of closures in England, Scotland and Wales following their respective smoking bans. Previously, the different start times of the ban had obscured the similarity of the decline across Britain, causing observers to blame other reasons for pubs closing - e.g. the recession, duty hikes, supermarket booze, the tie, etc.
When the ban was first introduced in July 2007, amid claims by health campaigners that smoke-free would attract more drinkers into pubs, tax inspectors said that the new law would not represent a material change in either direction to their trading position. As a result of the initial flawed advice, the Government's Valuation Office Agency (VOA) refused to give pubs any rate reduction for loss of business. The Conservatives have now accused ministers of "ripping off" of pubs and "covering up" vital information that could stop locals going out of business. Currently four are closing every day according to the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA).
The future of the pub does not look good. Certainly there will always be pubs that will survive, but equally certainly there are a vast number that will not, which is sad for us all. High taxes and greed have condemned the great British pub to a slow death.Surely it cannot be all gloom and doom; maybe it just feels that way. How sad to see so many pubs closing down or changing use.
It is only when a pub that has meant something to us personally closes down that we feel particularly sad. The pub where you had your first underage pint, and perhaps the place you met the love of your life, is now an empty building plot or worse. All those good laughs, darts games, heated footy arguments and happy times, gone forever. As the old saying goes " We Don’t know what we’ve got until it is gone"
